IC INFORMATION
Characters Name: Leo Valdez
Age: 15
Canon:The Olympians
Canon Point: The Mark of Athena, when Percy and Annabeth fall to Tartarus.
Species: Demigod (Son of Hephaestus)
Gender: Male
Orientation: Straight as a rock. Is totally looking for a nice girlfriend who appreciates his wit. |: He is, as far as is shown in canon, only attracted to girls way out of his league.

History: A very in depth description here.

But to clarify some parts of his history...

Leo Valdez moved from foster home to being homeless to other foster homes from eight onward. For some, their only sin was being too caring, while he was in an honestly horrible foster home with others. The books say he ran away from foster homes six times, but they likely don’t take into account the time in between, any group housing for boys, or any switches made between foster homes of the caretaker's own volition.

At the very least, as is revealed in the third book, many homes accused him of being a pyromaniac--"when he got angry, things started burning." The court system likely assigned a person to care for his financial needs and sent him to the Wilderness School after the sixth time he ran away from a foster home.

Appearance: Brown curly hair, sharp facial features with a round face, Leo has been described as a latino Santa’s elf. He’s about five feet six inches at age fifteen. He generally wears jeans and a ratty shirt--things that he doesn’t care about getting dirty, or burned... Which are most things.

Leo as drawn by the illustrator.

Personality: Leo Valdez is hot and fast. Sadly for him, I mean this in the most literal sense. Let’s start at the beginning, though, and show what most other people see.

He’s a trickster. It’s pretty obvious from the devilish smile, quick fingers and that glint in his eye. His actions match his looks, in the sense that Leo loves to make jokes, make fun of people, and pull pranks. Turn your back on him for a second, and the computer might start blurting out silly phrases, the lights might start blinking in morse code, there could be a mini pyrotechnics show--anything flies. He can be a little rough on people, but he draws the line at physical contact, usually resorting to his sarcasm to stop bullies...or bully people.

Leo isn’t a natural bully, and he doesn’t take joy from mocking people weaker than him. He does, however, use it as a defense. When he feels threatened, he prefers to take the offensive against someone, digging into anything he can. He did this to Frank, his uneasy friend and the boyfriend of Hazel--someone he had a serious crush on. Not to mention Frank was a shapeshifter who could morph into any animal he wanted. Whenever given the chance, he would dig into Frank’s attributes--his weight, actions, the way he did certain tasks... “Yes, Frank, that is how everyone solves Chinese Handcuffs. By turning into an iguana.”

Now, where does that defense stem from? For one, Leo’s mother died when he was eight due to an accident he caused--in self defense--, and he only got over the fact a few months before his current canon point. With that, he needed something serious to cover up any pain, any feeling of threat, and his nature already tended towards being a trickster.

Along with that, Leo has issues relating to people, and insecurity. It most likely comes from a mix of his father--Hephaestus, the god of smithing who always preferred his machines to people--and his past. Being convinced he was cursed on top of going from foster home to foster home in a span of seven years couldn’t have been easy for Leo. Combined with a diagnosis of dyslexia and ADHD, it’s surprising that he managed as well as he did.

And manage well, he did. Leo is upbeat and good-natured, and he does like to make what friends he has happy and is loyal to them. He’s just gotten out of a branch of his life where he opened up to no one about his life, and while he’s still insecure, it helps that much more with making connections. All in all, he can be a pretty happy kid when circumstances allow.

Now that we’ve built that base, let’s get back to the opening statement: hot and fast.

Leo is very, very ADHD. He typically can’t sit still unless he’s completely engrossed in something, and his mouth is typically two feet ahead of his brain. Also,he’s spontaneous, and has low impulse control at times. I feel that this paragraph should be mentioned:

"On stern quarterdeck, Leo rushed around looking like a madman, checking his gauges and wrestling levers. Most helmsmen would've been satisfied with a pilot's wheel or tiller. Leo had also installed a keyboard, monitor, aviation controls from a Learjet, a dubstep soundboard, and motion-control sensors from a Nintendo Wii. He could turn the ship by pulling on the throttle, fire weapons by sampling an album, or raise sails by shaking his Wii controllers really fast. Even by demigod standards, Leo was seriously ADHD.”

See? Bouncy. He can be serious, though, when the situation is terrible or if he’s pissed off, but that incites a nasty temper.

That said, let’s move onto the hot part. Leo’s mind is very, very fast. When he thinks too fast or gets too excited, he literally starts bursting into flame. With his immunity to fire, it’s not a problem for him, but it does tend to be a problem for nearby objects... like an ice bridge he’s supposed to be crossing, for example. Along with that, he has a bit of a temper that tends to be triggered when people put him down.

Last but not least, he flirts. A lot. Typically with girls who are far, far out of his league. It’s a curse, you see, that he is attracted to any smart, cold-hearted girl. He knows they love him, really, but they’re too proud to admit it, which makes it all the better--

Hah, right. Leo is very much a hopeless romantic.

Abilities:
Behavior
- ADHD: Most demigods have the inability to keep still, as they are constantly analyzing their surroundings. Like them, he is easily distracted. Unlike them, his is worse than usual. Bad timing for sudden words, anyone?
-Has good fighting instinct, though no formal training.
-Can likely steal, as he’s been through many foster homes and schools.
-Can sense traps. Evidently.
Language
-Dyslexia: “His brain is hardwired for ancient Greek.” Meaning he can read Greek pretty well, but modern languages? Yowch.
-Speaks and reads English, Spanish, Greek, and Morse Code. Understands, uh, machine. It’s a long story.
Specific to Leo
-As a son of Hephaestus, he has an aptitude for anything mechanical. Repairing, building, using--it comes automatically. Leo has built helicopters out of pipe cleaners, made a boat that uses a wii remote as a controller, and so on.
-Another ability that his type of demigods have is being able to understand and manipulate certain metals and locks. IE he can turn the spinners in a safe, or sense a weakness in a metal chain.
-Can operate any machine he comes across. Any single one.
-Pyrokinesis: Controls fire, and immune to it, for the most part--he slept in a fireplace once or twice as a baby. Can shoot flames out of his hands, controls the temperature, and so on.
-Leo can cook. Pretty decently, all things considered. Mostly things that can be made over a fire.

What would disappear is anything related to fire, and his ability to put a hand on a machine and innately understand all of the workings, though he could still open it up and investigate it on his own. He would be able to translate machine noises, though not with the precision he had before.

SAMPLES
First Person:
[There’s a click, and then a view of a row of pink houses. It turns up the street and continues cataloging the other side of the street, very slowly and deliberately.]

Hi YouTube of the otherworld! [Whoever’s manning the camera doesn’t point it at themselves, but they do tilt it down to some sandals.] I can’t really stay that long, but welcome to Leo world! I’ll be your tour guide on this nutty ride!

[Now to a bunch of documents for a moment, too fast to really get a glimpse of them, before he centers on one of the houses.] Okay, seriously, is this a world where everyone’s identical and a drone? While I’d love to see more of me around, that’s kinda creepy. So, like, can I just turn in my membership card? That’d be epic. Can’t be that hard, right? If these psychos can get me house and a whole thing, maybe they can let me out?

[The voice has a slight accent to it, but it’s not very noticeable. The owner shakes the phone for a second, before turning it off.]

Third Person:
Leo didn’t want to be here. At first, he really thought it was a dream from a god, a titan, something weird like that. As a demigod, he got lots of weird dreams--prophecies, ‘come save me’ dreams, Dirt Lady trying to mess with him, even from his father. This time, the pink crap made him think it might be from Aphrodite.

But fifteen minutes of wandering around the streets and messing with the weird phone, he decided that this was going nowhere. Seriously, even if some god had teleported here, they could give him more direction than some lease papers and crap. Real nice, now how was he getting back to his ship?

Another ten minutes of messing with the phone, then Leo realized he was going to attract monsters at this rate. So he pocketed the phone, eyed his keys, and decided that the house or whatever could wait.

No, he did what he’d done for years, and what he thought he was supposed to stop doing six months ago.

He shoved the phone in his pocket, clutched the papers and ran. He? He was so out of here.

That sounds like it could be fun. Zeva likes to prowl around and spy on people. She might try to mug him if she gets the chance.
